So I took a personality test a Jungian/ Myers-Briggs type test. It was kinda fun and surprisingly accurate. Wow! only 1.8% of the US population thinks the way I do. No wonder why my life is this way!
Kinda crazy that marketing specialist came up first in my list of favored careers since I've been doing internet marketing for over 4 years now. Uncanny, no?

Choosing Embroidery Thread By George Royal

Selecting the right type of threads for any embroidery work is important because the color and texture of the design, and eventually the look of the final product depend on the material and type of thread used. There’s a wide variety of embroidery thread to choose from, so take your time to decide what type or combination should be best for the design you have in mind. More importantly, thread selections should be based on Sewability, Seam Performance and Appearance, Availability and Cost.

Types:

1. Rayon: This type of thread has a great sheen, and so the best looking embroidery designs are stitched with it. Rayon threads can range from combinations of two or more colors twisted together thereby forming a single strand, to one solid color strand. They are widely available, mostly in standard 40 wt. and 30 wt. Even though Rayon is the most popular type, it’s not very sturdy because of its thinness.

2. Polyester: Polyester thread is more durable than Rayon but it is not as attractive. However, this type of embroidery thread hardly shrinks or fades, and if combined with Rayon, the effect they provide is nearly indistinguishable. It is also cheaper than Rayon thread.

3. Cotton: Cotton thread allows for a wide range of tension adjustments because of its texture. It has a nice sheen, is quite sturdy (though finer threads above 50 wt. are not), and typically used for machine embroidery.

4. Silk: Silk embroidery thread hardly breaks and has its own unique, and probably the best sheen. Threads come in various sizes but their availability is low so they are mostly used for luxury fabrics.

5. Metallic Thread: This type of thread has a core wrapped with a metal foil which may be coated with silver alloy, and color is added to this foil with a polyester film which may also be applied as an undercoating. Metallic thread is one of the most durable available on the market.

6. Mylar Thread: Plies of film are combined into a layer, cut into slices to create Mylar threads. They are durable but may break under high-speed sewing. One unique color feature is holographic hue, which picks up and reflects light or color from other surrounding objects. This really enhances the color and design of the embroidery.

7. Special-effect: Like the name suggests, this type of thread can be used to create different design effects, such as crewel-like effect. Some of the special effect threads change colors under sunlight, or may glow in the dark.

Quality Evaluation:

1. Tensile Strength: The tensile strength of an embroidery thread can be tested by sawing a suspended strand with another strand back and forth until the first strand breaks. The faster it breaks, the lower the strength and quality of that particular thread type.

2. Elongation: A good thread must have the right amount of stretch. Take a piece of the thread and stretch it till it breaks. The strand should neither break too quickly nor stretch for too long.

3. Sheen: The luster and quality of the sheen can be tested by studying the color and design of a finished embroidery product.

Custom LovePlusOne for Christmas!

Here are a few beautiful drawings sent to me by a customer in Idaho who ordered 5 custom shirts for her whole family (grandma too)! These snowflakes were drawn by each of her children, and all three will appear in a vertical row down the front of the shirt, included in the original design will be the words, "let it snow" and "christmas 2006". Too cute! I will get an "after xmas" picture so you can see how they turn out.

I've been getting a lot of... how shall I call it "fan mail" lately, egging me on to come up with new designs for the baby collection, and requests for custom collections ...everyone wants more stuff from me. Whew, overworked and underpayed!

Let me let you in to my ole' brains...I sort of created the Custom Collection page as a way for people to contact me and tell me what they want as opposed to me designed a whole bunch of stuff that doesn't sell real well. That makes me grumpy and then I just want to close up shop!

Thanks to all of you who keep at me though, you inspire me to keep going with this project, if it wasn't for you, I would have given it up long ago.

Hamilton Pool and surrounding Preserve is one of the most beautiful swimming holes I have ever been to. Its in Travis County about 35 miles outside the city. A unique natural area surrounds this pool that is "managed" meaning you need to get by the ranger to get in a limited number of swimmers and hikers a day
A texas family implemented a grotto and canyon basically a thousand years of water erosion well mantained if that makes sense, anyway it dates back over 8,000 years and its pretty cool.

Have not posted since christmas--- its been awhile, but nothing much exciting was happening in this life until now--We finally made it into Austin proper--we have a great place just off Shoal Creek and Lamar. I can walk and bike everywhere of interest: shops, bookstores, museums and thank god there's not a wal Mart anywhere in site!
So I thought I'd show y'all around the new digs by taking a cople of snapshots this lovely March 1st evening where the weather was a pleasant 79' as we took our stroll. Hopefully you (you people who know who you are)will come visit me now--

My dearest friend Valerie just won first place in a Baltimore paper comics contest. She will now be writing and drawing a weekly strip for the paper entitled Shabby Tabby.
Besides being the most amazing friend she also happens to be a truly brilliant and gifted artist. Please read her weekly strip here, click "comics."The strip may be hard to decifer at first,but upon weekly meditation, all sorts of philosophical questions will be answered, or perhaps asked? Maybe even a little of both. You'll have to read it and find out.
Besides being handy with the pen and ink, she also knows her way around with a paintbrush ~

Its been almost a year since I left new york for big sky country and I still feel like a tourist for the most part. My brother and dad came to texas from california, they've never been here before, so we did some really toristy things like visit the alamo in san antonio, and see the urban bat colony in austin, the largest urban bat poulation in the world lives right in downtown austin under a bridge. There are over a million bats in this town! Cool, keeps the mosquito poulation down and there are lots of sqeeters in texas. here are some photographic highlights-

crafter documentary project

Betsy Greer of Craftivism (www.craftivism.com) is trying to put together an awesome project, I'm actually jealous I didn't think of it myself! Now that I know about her idea, I hope I can help get all of you interested! She intends to make a doc based on the artist/craft community by visiting us at our homes and workspaces and telling our stories and focusing on the common threads and the real life links, not just virtual links, between us. There are many incredible stories here and this project would show this more human side of our community by focusing on our lives in a way that isn't only consumer based. This part which IS the whole picture and the life blood of our work, but which we seldom have time to focus on (outside our "about me" pages) since we all are busy working on our craft to feed our families and earn a living. Three cheers to Betsy for showing the human/artist side to this amazing community of working women

my husband teases me on a weekly basis and everyone else who comes over makes fun of my "balls" of floss. "How do you find anything in that mess?" they taunt. Little do they realize, I know where every damn little teeny inch of floss is that I may need.

Since my workspace is an armchair and side table in the living room, everyone gets a front row seat to my insanity. I've moved the "balls" out into the yard to show you all so you can taunt me via internet.

its those little everyday things that forced me to flee new york city after almost an entire life there. Most of my adult life was seemingly spent, waiting in lines, arguing over trivialites, being called vulgarities by postal workers paying too much for everything and having to waste an entire day running errands that take no more than 45 minutes in a small town. Ok, I rant a little here, but my point is~today I realized why so many people leave big cites for small towns, and ok, the case could probably be made for the opposite as well but thats not my point today (check back in a week or so)...
So, I call the dentist in my town, of which there are approximately three. I need to get my wisdom teeth looked at because I think they need to be removed~ The dentist himsef answers the phone, um hello! Not on your life in NY! He actually listened to everything I had to say and when I was done, get ready for this one, because I currently carry no dental insurance, he said, and I quote, "we'll just clean you up and they'll be no charge." What? I gasped, "are you sure"? "Yeah, since you only need a simple perscription filled, come in and I'll write it up for you."
WOW.
So I go to his nice, clean, friendly, uncrowded office, I'm in and out of there in half an hour free of charge, with perscription in hand, heading to Hay's Pharmacy. An old timey pharmacist in my town, who fills my perscription in five minutes flat.
WOW. In that five minutes I even squeezed in a trip to the post office, which was right across the street from the pharmacy. All windows were open in full view of no lines and a smiling teller. "How are you today?" Theres a novel approach to a greeting.
This may not seem so amazing to many, but in my previous life in NY, this same experience would have been ridled with subway delays, an abundance of unecessary paperwork, a snarling receptionist, a curse-out in the post office (this really happened to me in the Brooklyn PO) and a medical staff looking more like their intenet was to harm me rather then do me any good. The moral of this stupid story is, when your looking at the upside of being in the middle of cotton fields and cows, the view is a lot rosier when people are REALLY freakin' nice to you. Amen.

Movies have been a part of my life since before I can remember,movie watching is perhaps one of the only distinct childhood memories I have left. The Paramont Theater in Austin, Texas; where I now live, is having a film retrospective this weekend, in which the 1966 Goddard classic, Masculine/Feminine will be a part of. One of the more underappreciated of all the Goddard films, it just happens to be my favorite.

While I was in college in Manhattan, I spent every minute I was not in class (even sometimes when I was supposed to be) watching French New Wave films. New York has so many retrospective theaters it seemed like there was New Wave festival every other week somewhere around the city.

Now that I am a mom, and not a cinefile living in NY, I wonder if this film will hold up for me? My life is so different now...hopefully I will just have a new interpretation of it. The best films allow you to do that, totally alter your world view, and come back to them and their still great, just different great.
The hubby and I are going to watch Masculine/Feminine tomorrow night at the Paramont, I'll let you know how I like it... here's a link to the wonderful theater itself.

the color factory

I spent most of my morning dyeing garments for the Rocktots label I am currently designing for. The illustrations that I posted in "feeling sketchy" will soon be embroidered on the garments you see hanging here.
My company is growing!!
I am in the process of finding a manufacturer to make the shirts (already dyed) with my label sewn in. This is actually a lot harder than I thought. I got a call from Pakistan yesterday...yikes, thats far away. If I can find a good price on manufacturing the finished garment for me I will save so much time, which I can spend focusing on designing as opposed to dyeing and sewing labels and all that stuff. wish me luck.

Round Rock, a suburban community just outside Austin, not my favorite place to visit but does have one perk: its own minor league baseball team complete with stadium. (Dell Diamond) The stadium itself comes with field,duh, but also offers some unusual delights such as rock climbing, pool with volleyball court (have to rent that one for the night) playground equipment, restaurant and lots of beer which you can drink while wandering aimlessly around from amusement to amusement while repeating this mantra: 'I live in Texas and its bigger here!' hell, go Round Rock Express!

we got to visit a house that Julien has called "Shangrila" since he was a child in the Texas Hill Country. The home belongs to a family friend, but has been used very little in the past twenty years. When we heard it was available to us, we jumped on it.The house is rustic, kinda 70's hunting lodge feel, but totally relaxing to chill out right on the Guadalupe river and swim all weekend.
